Close Shave Saves Cash

Waste Exchange works by putting people who need something directly in contact with people who have something to give away. That not only saves resources, but also saves time, energy and money by cutting out the ‘middle man’.

For both the Wenmeckers family and their ‘supplier’ that has certainly proved true. They have a lifestyle block at Loburn which boasts many established Blue Gum trees, plus the natives and shrubs which they have planted. They used to buy untreated wood shavings to use as weed suppressant after spraying, and to keep moisture in the soil around the trees.

The person who now supplies the family farm with wood shavings had their own problem – how to get rid of a constant supply of them. They used to pay to have the wood shavings transported to a garden supply company, where they were sold on (to people like the Wenmeckers family!) Both sides were losing out, but having made contact via Waste Exchange they now deal directly with each other, saving both of them money.

“It was easy to access the shavings through the Exchange” says Marion Wenmeckers. “I find it a really good service, and I have told my friends to look it up as well.” Check out the listings in this paper, or live on www.terranova.org.nz, to see what resources you might be able to access, or supply, and how you might save time and money.
