Piano Exchange is Music to Many Ears

It may not be SingStar, but a new piano will still allow for a few sing-alongs at the Waipara Boys Brigade camp.

The piano was one of two owned by St John Anglican Church in Woolston. As the number of people skilled in playing the piano decreased, the need for the pianos also diminished said church secretary Janet Baskill. “We wanted to get rid of one as it was just sitting around” says Janet. The church was reluctant to dump the piano, which was still quite functional, but no-one seemed interested in taking it. When Janet saw an article on Waste Exchange in a diocese magazine it seemed to be an ideal avenue for passing the piano on to someone else.

Ross Williams from Waipara Boys Brigade saw the listing and responded straight away. Ross has been using the Exchange service for about four years and has accessed a large number of items including movie theatre seats, old ski tow rope (useful for tug-of-wars and boundary ropes), and mussel floats from Marlborough (cut in half they make great tubs for downhill fun!)

“We’re very pleased” says Janet. “It’s good to be able to help other people who are helping young people. It’s so sad to see the things that people throw away.” Ross agrees. “I’d use the Exchange service more if I had the time to read all the listings and uncover the great resources. It’s a fantastic idea.”

And now for something completely different!
