Kate McLeod first heard of Waste Exchange some years ago when she was an art teacher. At that time she never had need of its resources, but recently the Exchange has been of great – and quite novel – service to her as an Account Manager for Q Brand Agency.

Each year the advertising agency Kate works for holds a charity art auction, and each one of the 22 staff members at Q must create an original piece of art. The money raised goes to a local charity, most recently Te Mapua Trust, which helps children from difficult and disadvantaged homes.

Given her artistic background and interests, perhaps Kate had an advantage over some of her colleagues, and she certainly put that talent to good use to create a unique and impressive piece of art. The theme of this year’s auction was ‘FACE VALUE’.

In considering ideas for her artwork Kate decided that she would conduct a Google image search on the internet, and whatever image first appeared would form the premise for her art work. The first hit for ‘Face Value’ was the album cover from Phil Collins’ 1981 album of the same name. Kate’s inspiration came from combining the very recognisable image with the singularly modern method by which she had accessed it – computers.
By making use of the Exchange service for the first time Kate was able to source over 100 old keyboards, and she used approximately 10,000 untainted keys to create a 180cm2 mosaic version of the ‘Face Value’ album cover. The result is an extremely innovative piece of art that raised $8,300 of the $20,000 that the auction generated for a very deserving cause.
